As a native West Texan, I strive to record the humor and sensitivity of our residents in my work in order to share our spirit with the outside world. My involvement in art started early due to being raised by community-minded artists who saw West Texas as special. They exposed me to the concept that sharing your talents to help others can be very fulfilling. Through them I had the opportunity to meet wonderful artists, musicians and community leaders.
Since I have always enjoyed expanding my skills and experience while assisting others in discovering their creative powers, I was blessed to serve as an art teacher at Permian High School for 23 years. During my teaching career, I had the opportunity to work with others to create opportunities for students to attend workshops, exhibit their work and compete for scholarships. I also became involved in West Texas Watercolor Society, Watercolor Horizons Group and American Plains Artists. The artists in these organizations helped me understand the need to actively promote the arts.
I fell in love with watercolor back in junior high while painting outdoors with my Dad. Watercolor’s capricious nature, shimmer and transparency captured my heart. As a teacher, I found that it was the medium that allowed me more flexibility in style and expression.
I am currently working as a full time studio artist who continues teaching through demos and workshops. As an artist and teacher, I have been fortunate to be acknowledged for my work through numerous awards and invitations. As a Signature Member of the APA, I was delighted to have one of my paintings highlighted in an article in the Western Art Collector magazine. I have exhibited in six states and wonderful facilities. In addition to formal studies, I have enhanced my skills through professional artists’ workshops such as Naomi Brotherton, Artleta Pech, Tom Knapp, Douglas Walton, Warren Taylor and Ken Hosmer.
